The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on the way that many people work. Pre-pandemic it seemed that working from home was something only a small percentage of office workers were able to do. Even then, maybe a day or two a week seemed typical.
With the onset of the pandemic, there was a tremendous shift to remote working or working from home, for millions of workers. So-called hybrid work. It was no different here in Metro Vancouver. I think one of the offshoots of this phenomenom was the big jump in interest in Fraser Valley real estate and homes. 2021 was a banner year for both sales and price gains, across the region. Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford and Chilliwack all boomed. Big.
The fact that some real estate markets ran up 20, 30 or even 40%+ in some of our communities, shows a high level of interest in people moving East from the core of Metro Vancouver. With the option to work from home for many Metro Vancouver residents, concerns around commuting, I believe, have become less of a concern. Therefore, we continue to see major buyer interest in homes in communities like North Delta, Surrey, Langley and Abbotsford. I don't think this trend is going to change.
As I wrote about in The Fraser Valley is Great For Young Families to Call Home ,there are a lot of great housing options here. Compared to the really dense urban core of Vancouver, the relatively larger homes and properties have become increasingly popular with buyers. I don't see that trend slowing down, anytime soon. Geographical flexibility, for many workers, means that the Fraser Valley is now a viable housing option.
